What is Floatlet?

Floatlet is an independent, free and open-source Windows desktop app inspired by the Dynamic Island concept. Its compact capsule sits above your workspace, then expands when you need playback controls, a temporary file tray, quick settings, search, calendars or clocks. You can inspect the MIT-licensed source on GitHub, and the app does not require an account or subscription.

Why choose Floatlet?

  • One small place for everyday actions instead of another full-size dashboard.
  • Native C++ app with no bundled browser or account requirement.
  • Free download and MIT-licensed source you can inspect or contribute to.
  • Optional calendar subscriptions stay encrypted for your Windows user.

Floatlet is currently an unsigned x64 preview. Check the feature and hardware limits if you need a particular integration before downloading.

Which Windows PCs can use it?

Floatlet runs on Windows 10 and 11 Intel and AMD x64 desktops and laptops, regardless of manufacturer. Windows 11 ARM PCs can run the same x64 release using Windows emulation. It is not a Surface-only app. There is no native ARM64 package yet. Windows versions older than 10 are not supported.

What can I do without switching apps?

  • See artwork and skip tracks from supported Windows media sessions.
  • Keep temporary file references, then drag copies into another app.
  • Adjust volume, mute and supported internal display brightness.
  • Run a stopwatch, set a timer or arm an alarm while Floatlet is open.
  • Browse months and optionally view a read-only Google Calendar subscription.

Does it work with multiple monitors?

The island can follow the pointer between monitors and accounts for Windows display scaling. Pinning keeps a panel open. Hardware arrangements vary; report display or capture issues with your scaling and monitor setup.

Does Floatlet need an account?

No account or subscription is required. Calendar integration is optional. The app keeps settings and tray references locally. Removing a tray reference does not delete the original file.

How lightweight is it?

The app uses C++ and Windows composition without Electron or a bundled browser. Animations stop when unnecessary, and compact clock text updates once per second. Actual memory, CPU and battery use depends on your hardware and active features. We do not promise zero resource use.

Which controls depend on hardware?

Internal brightness requires a supported Windows brightness interface. External-monitor brightness is not implemented. Wi-Fi requires a wireless adapter and saved profiles for in-app connection. Night light and some other controls open Windows interfaces. Caller photos and answer/end-call controls are not implemented.

How do I install it?

Download the standalone unsigned x64 EXE and run Floatlet.exe. For a managed installation with startup, choose the optional ZIP. The included installer can add startup for your Windows user. Read the installation guide and full capability limits before use.
